So, we see this huge so called love-centric and emotional
play between Ashar and Khirad as a major part of Humasafar. But the question
that is to be asked is ‘ What is the idea of love that is being portrayed to
us?’ We clearly see Ashar’s judgment being clouded as a result of his
insecurities that emerge out of the ‘friendship’ between Khirad and Khizar. He
has all of a sudden gone overly possessive and insecure of the bond between
himself and Khirad. On the other hand, Khirad, not even for once, is seen wary
of Sarah’s bond with his ‘best friend’ Ashar who happens to be Khirad’s
husband! Talk about male insecurities in a typical Pakistani society.
Moreoever, Ashar is not able to ‘see’ through Khirad despite
the fact that he puts up this entire fascade of being deeply in love with her.
Khirad literally begs him to trust her by saying things like ‘Ashar, aap mera
yaqeen karain, mein ne aapki amanat mein khayanat nahi ki hai’ etc but Ashra is
so deeply drowned in his insecurities that his rational judgement is absolutely
impaired. He, all of a sudden, emerges as an irrational lover. Just like in the
entire drama, in this scene, Khirad’s purity is emphasized with whiteness of
her dress in contrast to the other characters in the scene. Ashar’s
irrationality in this particular scene is even more heightened by Fareeda’s
choice of words like ‘moo pe kalak’ ‘behudgi’ ‘behiaayee’ etc. This further
highlights the delusions of Ashar who refuses to ‘see’ the innocence of Khirad at
all!
