Choice of Profession in Dhoop Kinaray

What is really interesting so far in Dhoop Kinaray  is the way choice of a profession is shown with respect to the characters of Anji and Zoya.
Zoya is forced to continue a field of study that is chosen for her by her dead mother, as per her father: “When you were about to come, this girl (your mother) used to say that be it a son or a daughter, I will definitely make him (or her) a doctor”
Anji and her mother agree that she should continue her studies in Fine Arts, against the wishes of the Angraise Bahadur i.e. Anji’s Father.
After finishing with the education when it comes to entering the workplace, both Anji and Zoya are forced to work in an environment where they don’t wish to work. Zoya gradually comes to accept it and adjusts to it. But Anji, the creative soul that she is, cannot adjust to the materialistic and dry atmosphere of her father’s office.
The way in which these two are shown is interesting if we see  Hasina Moien as  a writer who wishes to bring about a change in the society. Choice of a profession is important for the individual because of what Zoya alludes to when her father asks her to quit: “That which we do, that which is our profession, it slowly becomes a part of our life and our character, then we can’t separate ourselves from it. I can’t do anything else now nor do I want to”.

For Hasina Moien, the profession you choose is what defines you as a person.
It is okay for Zoya to become an unwilling Doctor, but it isn’t okay for  Anji to become an unwilling Businesswoman . The reason for this difference is twofold. Firstly, Medicine as a profession is something that gives to the community as compared to business which is purely a materialistic field. Secondly, Anji  has an artistic soul and such people need to be allowed to have room for growth as they play an important role in the building of a society and its culture. For Zoya: “Doctory ki baat aur hai”- Medicine is a different issue. For Anji: “Ussay Khud apni zarurat hai”- She needs herself. These two quotes from Zoya’s father and Anji’s  mother ,respectively, sum up the situation.

  1. Similarly Anji's father's choice of profession i.e. business also is reflective of what type of profession was important in the West. Angraiz Bahadur's insistence on scientific management (interview, contract etc.) is representative of the importance of the businessman in the West. As opposed to dramas today that frequently portray the male characters as office workers, Dhoop Kinarey emphasizes the long term, giving-to-community importance of professions such as doctors and artists. However, the reason for this difference may also lie in the fact that dramas then were corrective while dramas today are reflective.
