Dhoop Kinare- A refreshing approach to class structure.
Perhaps the biggest contention I had while watching Humsafar
had to do with consumerism as linked to class. Class in Humsafar is defined through the
use of various materialistic tools such as expensive apparel and sipping of coffee
in fancy cafes. The households of the two classes are also used to depict how
wealth is important in defining class boundaries. However, Dhoop Kinare is
quite the refreshing change to this painfully redundant commentary on class.
Even though it makes sense to say that class in this manner
is almost absent in the drama, another tool is used to show what constitutes
the upper class. The idea of class is mainly played out through the role of
education. The two girls in the drama actively pursue careers from the onset of
the drama as opposed to the annoying concept of 'marrying into a wealthy
household'. With Zoya working as a doctor and Anji working as an interior
designer through proper education, the girls appear as equals even though it is
apparent that Anji belongs to a wealthier family. Since, both these girls are
in a similar position with respect to their education, their movement within
the classes seems to be fluid.
In addition to education, professionalism also surfaces as a
tool of replacement to the materialistic boundaries of class. This is most
aptly represented in the scene where Zoya is asked to wash her face by Dr.
Ahmer, when she is called in due to her life threatening mistake of forgetting
a patients injection. Not only does she wash her face, but she herself takes
her earrings off in agitation, signifying how the drama serves to vanquish a
materialism of sorts. Had this been Khirad adorned in pretty looking attire,
Asher would have, probably momentarily forgotten the big mistake she had
committed.
Hence, the Drama in some sense aims to rid society of the
materialistic approach to class divisions, instead raising more important
issues such as education and professionalism as a form of class in themselves.
